There are hundreds of camps between the Mara and Samburu and they are not remotely equal. We book the ones we have slept in, put you with guides who can actually read the ground, and time the drives so you are out when the animals are rather than when the schedule says.

- The migration crossing the Mara, roughly July to October
- Elephants against Kilimanjaro at Amboseli, best in the early morning
- Big cats in the Mara Triangle, which stays quieter than the main reserve
- Balloon safari at dawn, if the budget stretches to it once

Day 1
Nairobi to the Mara
Five to six hours by road, or a forty-minute flight if you would rather not spend the day driving. Afternoon game drive once you have dropped your bags.
Days 2–3
Full days in the reserve
Early starts, long mornings, a break through the heat, back out at four. This is when the trip earns itself.
Day 4
Conservancy or onward
Move to a private conservancy for walking and night drives, which the main reserve does not allow, or start back.
