What licence do I need to drive myself?

A valid national driving licence you have held for at least two years. If it is not in English you will also need an International Driving Permit, which you get in your home country before travelling — not here.

Is there a minimum hire period?

Yes, and it varies by vehicle class. Ask us when you enquire and we will tell you straight away rather than letting you find out at the end.

Is a deposit required?

Yes. It is refundable and returned once the vehicle comes back in the same condition. We will tell you the exact amount in writing before you commit to anything.

What does the daily rate actually include?

We itemise it in your quote — insurance, mileage allowance and fuel arrangement are all stated explicitly. If something is not in the quote, it is not going to appear on the bill afterwards.

Can you deliver the vehicle to me?

Yes. Airport, hotel or address, in Nairobi and most major towns. Say where and when when you enquire.

What does a driver cost?

A daily rate on top of the vehicle, which covers the driver for a normal working day. Long days and overnight trips are charged differently, and we tell you which applies before you book.

Do I pay for the driver’s accommodation on a multi-day trip?

On safari and coast trips the camps and lodges we work with almost always provide driver accommodation. Where they do not, it is in your quote as a line item rather than a surprise.

Are your drivers guides as well?

Accepted Answer

Some are, some are drivers. They are different skills and we do not pretend otherwise. If you want a guide who can read animal behaviour, ask for one and we will put a proper guide with you.

Can I take the vehicle across the border?

Into Tanzania or Uganda, yes, with advance notice so we can arrange the paperwork and extend the insurance. It is not something that can be sorted the night before.

What happens if the car breaks down?

You call one number, day or night, and we deal with it. Depending on where you are that means a mechanic, a replacement vehicle, or a driver coming to you.

Are the roads difficult?

Main highways are fine. Park tracks and some rural roads need a proper 4WD and are much worse in the rains, which is exactly why we ask where you are going before recommending a vehicle.

Do you charge for planning a trip?

No. Planning, recommendations and quotes cost nothing. We make our money on the vehicle and on agreed margins with partners — never by marking you up for asking questions.

How far ahead should I book?

For July, August and December, as early as you can — the good camps fill months out. Outside those, a few weeks is usually enough, and we can often do considerably less.

What is your cancellation policy?

Ours is reasonable and stated in your quote. Third-party bookings — camps, lodges, flights — follow their own policies, which we will show you before anything is confirmed.

M-Pesa or bank transfer for most bookings, and card where needed. Corporate accounts are invoiced monthly.
